The Rockies were blown out last night by the Braves which could have ended any hopes of the Rockies getting in on the mix for the trade deadline today. The Rockies are now 7.5 games out of the National League West division, and the Dodgers do not seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. Even though there is still a lot of baseball to be played, the Rockies are showing no signs of life and have been inconsistent all year long. It has been a frustrating year for everyone involved with the Rockies. They went into the year with the hopes to be making a run at the division crown, but as we head into August, the Rockies are staring at another losing season and one in which they miss out on the playoffs again and fall behind further in the West. They need to make some bigger moves in order to make the team better, instead of these little player to be named later deals that the Rockies front office is so fond of. No matter what the game still goes on and the Rockies are looking at taking on the Braves tonight in game three of their four game series.
Tyler Chatwood will be taking the mound for the Rockies tonight to face off against the talented Braves lineup. Chatwood has been the biggest and best surprise for the Rockies this year. He is now 7-3 on the year with a stellar 2.48 ERA. He was brilliant in his last start against the Brewers as he went seven innings allowing six hits, two runs, no walks and struck out a career high 11 batters on the day. He picked up his second consecutive victory on the year. The seven victories is also a career high for the 23 year old, as his previous career high was six which happened in 2011 when he was a member of Angels. Chatwood has been lights out on the road this year as he has a 3-2 record with a minuscule 1.23 ERA in six games started on the road. Both of his losses on the road he has given up one earned run. He lost a game against the Dodgers in which he went the distance allowing just four hits and one run, but the Rockies lost the game 1-0 to Zach Greinke. His other loss on the road was in Cincinnati when he went four innings allowing just the one run, but was taken out of the game due to injury. Current Braves have hit Chatwood well, but he has been able to limit the damage taken against him. They are hitting .316 with six doubles and three RBI in 38 combined at bats. Surprise surprise, Freddie Freeman has had a lot of success against the Rockies pitcher as he is 3 for 6 against Chatwood with two doubles and one RBI. Chatwood will need to be careful with the Braves lineup as they have showed in the first two games of the series that they can put up crooked numbers at anytime. He will need to keep the ball low and away. The strike zone will be expanded by the Braves hitters, so Chatwood can exploit that and have a big night. Juan Nicasio failed to do this last night but Chatwood has much better command and better secondary pitches so he should have more success.
The Atlanta Braves will be sending Mike Minor to the mound tonight to face off against the Rockies. Minor is also having a great year as he has posted a 10-5 record with a 2.89 ERA. The 25 year old has been a solid option for the Braves rotation all year long and has been one of the only Braves starters to remain healthy all year. He picked up his 10th victory of the season in his last start against the Cardinals at home. He was very good in the game as he went seven innings allowing just four hits, one run, no walks and struck out five. At home this year, Minor has posted a 4-3 record with a 3.28 ERA in 11 games started on the year. Current Rockies hitters are hitting .289 against Minor with two home runs and 11 RBI in 45 combined at bats. Michael Cuddyer is 3 for 4 against him in his career with one double, one home run and four RBI. Wilin Rosario holds the other home run against him. Minor is a solid pitcher that has a great strikeout to walk ratio. He has struck out 138 batters in 137 innings and has walked only 28 on the year. He has very good command and can work both sides of the plate with ease. He could be a tough matchup for a lot of the Rockies hitters tonight.
The Braves lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Jason Heyward, CF
2. Justin Upton, RF
3. Freddie Freeman, 1B
4. Evan Gattis, LF
5. Brian McCann, C
6. Chris Johnson, 3B
7. Dan Uggla, 2B
8. Andrelton Simmons, SS
9. Mike Minor, P
The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Dexter Fowler, CF
2. Charlie Culberson, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Troy Tulowitzki, SS
5. Michael Cuddyer, RF
6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
7. Todd Helton, 1B
8. Yorvit Torrealba, C
9. Tyler Chatwood, P
First pitch for the game tonight is slated for 5:10 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will be looking to get back on track after losing the first two games of the series to the Braves. The trading deadline came and went for the Rockies without them making any moves. This either means that the Rockies are confident in the lineup that they have, or they lost phone service and were unable to get a hold of anybody. No matter what happened the Rockies will still be on the field tonight to take on the Braves.

What the Rockies Should Do Before the Trade Deadline
The Trade deadline is quickly approaching, and with the Rockies now sitting at 7.5 games back in the division, it may be time to realistically say that this season could be better spent by gaining prospects and players that will help the Rockies win for many years to come. They have a couple of big contracts on their books that they could potentially trade away to a team that is in need for a playoff push in the second half. If the Rockies can make any moves to make the team better in the future then they need to pull the trigger. If they don't then Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez could get fed up with the management and demand to be traded to a team that will actually do what it takes to win.
Jorge De La Rosa has been a very consistent pitcher for the Rockies this year and has a 10-5 record with a 3.21 ERA. De La Rosa is making 11 million dollars this year and the Rockies have a club option worth 11 million dollars for the 2014 season. A quality left handed starter could bring a hefty price tag in the trade market right now especially considering the lack of depth in available starters this year on the market. The Rockies should be looking to deal De La Rosa so they can clear the cap space and perhaps make a move in the free agent market in the off season. He should be able to bring at least one top level prospect and two mid level guys. Should the Rockies make a move and send De La Rosa to another suitor then they would need to find another option for the rotation to finish out the year. Perhaps Jeff Francis would slide back into that role or they could go with a younger pitcher like Tyler Matzek or Chad Bettis. The Rockies will have more options to go with the rotation next season as former first round selection Christian Friedrich has battled a back issue all year which has forced him to miss the majority of the season. He should be back at some point and from the sound of things he has seemingly figured things out on the mound and has had time to mature. Another pitcher to watch for the Rockies will be Eddie Butler. Butler is currently in Single A but has dominated and looks to have all of the tools to be successful at the Major League Level. The Rockies will most likely avoid trying to rush him to the Major Leagues so he could remain down in the minors for the next two seasons, unless he shows a great deal of improvement and there are no questions about whether or not he is ready for the Show. Another pitching option for the Rockies is this years first round selection Jonathan Gray. Gray could be on the fast track to the Major Leagues as he had a lot of time to develop at the University of Oklahoma. The 22 year old has a triple digit fastball and a very sharp breaking curve and could be the Rockies best option for a future ace. All of these options will be good pitchers for the Rockies and they would be able to avoid paying the 32 year old De La Rosa another 11 million dollars if they pick up his option. This will allow them to clear some room on their cap space and be primed to make more moves in the off season.
Another move that the Rockies should carefully take a look at is the move of Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer is having a monster season with the Rockies and he could be an asset to a team that needs a versatile player to fit into the middle of their order. Cuddyer is under contract through the 2014 season so he is not a rental player which would make more teams interested at the deadline because they would not be getting a rental player for the rest of the season but they are also getting him for next year as well. Lets face the fact that Cuddyer is not getting any younger and he could be at the peak of his performance right now. We have all seen what age can do to a players abilities (cough cough Todd Helton). Cuddyer is owed 10.5 million dollars next season and could be as much as 12 million depending on his performance on the year. The Rockies have a surplus of outfield prospects who are Major League ready such as Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon, and they have a few prospects who have bright futures but are currently not ready for the show in Kyle Parker, David Dahl, and Delta Cleary Jr. The speculation is that Cuddyer will replace Helton at first base next season but the fact of the matter is that the Rockies do not need to settle for another aging bat to hold down first base for a season. We have seen what that can do to a team as they are trying to get into a rhythm. Traditionally the first base spot should be for someone who can put up big offensive numbers but as Cuddyer gets another year older in the off season he will probably not see numbers like he has had this year ever again. The Rockies should look to move him to a contented and get back some pieces that could fit into the bullpen and at first base for the future.
The Rockies should also be listening to all offers that people are willing to make for pitchers in the Rockies bullpen. The bullpen needs to be dismantled and remade heading into next season. Matt Belisle and Rafael Betancourt will most likely not be in the mix when it comes to the 2014 season. Teams have been calling about the availability of Josh Outman. Outman has been good against left handers this seasons and that is appealing to most teams that are looking to add depth in their bullpen. The Rockies bullpen is not set up for any specialists, so Outman has not had a great season as he is much better suited to be a specialist as opposed to an inning at a time. He will not bring back much in return but he does not fit with the Rockies bullpen setup so anything we get would be better than having him pitch out of his element and struggle in the process.
The Rockies need to get serious about getting better on the pitching side of things, because right now they have the offensive weapons to be successful and make a run at a World Series Title. Let's face it, The Rockies front office have been gun shy to make any major moves since the disasters that were the Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle deals in the early 2000's. After those two deals did not work out, the Rockies have been scared to spend any money to get players into Coors Field. They need to end that thought process and go out and sign some big names in the off season. Trading Jorge De La Rosa and Michael Cuddyer before the trade deadline tomorrow, will open up a lot of cap space and allow them enough money to make a move for some great players for the 2014 season. It is time for the Rockies brass to show how much they are committed to making the Rockies into a winning franchise. They have until 2 PM Mountain time to make some moves.

Rockies Game Preview: 7/30
The Rockies will be taking on the Brave tonight in game two of their four game series. The Braves got the best of the Rockies last night as they defeated them 9-8 in 10 innings. The Rockies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the third inning, but Jorge De La Rosa and the Rockies defense were unable to hold the lead as the Braves answered back with six runs in the bottom half of the third. The Rockies battled all night and went into the ninth inning down by one but determined and eventually tied the game with an RBI single by Carlos Gonzalez. The Rockies lost in the 10th inning when Andrelton Simmons sent a ball into the left center field gap with Dan Uggla on first base. It was a walk off triple for Simmons and the Braves went home victorious. The Rockies will be looking for payback tonight as they take the field in Atlanta. The Rockies are now 51-56 on the season and sit 6.5 games back in the National League West division, and further back in the Wild Card race. With the trade deadline lurking, it will be interesting to see if Dan O'Dowd and Bill Geivett decide to make any moves before the deadline passes.
Taking the mound tonight for the Rockies is Juan Nicasio. Nicasio has pitched well since being called up after his demotion to AAA after his disastrous start in Boston in late June. He has allowed only one run in three starts, which spans 19 innings, and is 2-0 during that stretch. He has lowered his ERA by nearly one run as it was 5.31 after his start in Boston and it now sits at 4.40. On the season he has a 6-4 record but he seems to be a different pitcher since his return, and he is determined to prove that he belongs in the Major League rotation. Nicasio has not been good on the road this year as he has a 4.91 ERA but has managed a 3-3 record in 10 games started on the road. Current Braves have hit Nicasio hard in their career matchups. They are hitting .439 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 41 combined at bats. Nicasio should seriously consider walking Freddie Freeman every time he comes to the plate as he has done the most damage against him Freeman is 4 for 6 with one double, one triple, two home runs and six RBI. Nicasio will be looking to keep his streak going and continue to show the development that he needs in order to be successful at the Major League level. He has looked like a different pitcher in his last three starts and has been able to work within the strike zone and limit the amount of base runners he has had. If Nicasio can work in and out of the strike zone tonight then he ha a good chance to have another successful start. The Braves are notorious free swingers and will chase pitches out of the zone, so if Nicasio can be effectively wild then he has a chance to put up a big strikeout number.
The Braves will hand the ball off to Alex Wood who will have the task of taking on the talented Rockies offense. Wood was recently moved to the starting rotation due to the injuries in the Braves starting staff. On the year Wood has posted a 0-2 record with a 3.42 ERA in 17 appearances (two starts). Wood has made both of his starts this year against the Mets. In those starts he was 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA in 7 1/3rd innings pitched. Wood was a second round selection in the 2012 draft and was being utilized in the bullpen because of the injuries to Johnny Venters and Eric O'Flaherty. The 6'4" 215 pound left hander has good stuff on the mound but is still working on developing his breaking ball. He has a good fastball that can work as high as 95-96 MPH when coming out of the bullpen, but he sits between 91-93 when he is a starter. He has a very good changeup that works in the mid 80's and his breaking ball that he throws right now is more of a slurve that also works in the mid 80's. He generally will stick to the fastball and changeup but he will have to occasionally work in the slurve just to keep the Rockies hitters off balance. He is young at 22 years old and inexperienced as a starter, so the Rockies will look to take advantage of him early and force Atlanta to turn to the bullpen earlier than they plan to.
The Braves lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Jason Heyward, CF
2. Justin Upton, RF
3. Freddie Freeman, 1B
4. Evan Gattis, LF
5. Brian McCann, C
6. Chris Johnson, 3B
7. Dan Uggla, 2B

First pitch for the game tonight is at 5:10 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will be looking to get some revenge from last night's loss, and will also be looking to show the Rockies front office that they still have some fight left in them and are going to make a run in the division.

Rockies Drop Series Opener in Atlanta
The Rockies and the Braves battled in Atlanta tonight but in the end the Braves came out victorious by a score of 9-8. Jorge De La Rosa had one of his toughest starts of the season tonight as he was only able to last five innings. Brandon Beachy made his return to the Major Leagues after over a year absence from the game and he was rusty as would be expected as he only lasted 3 2/3rd innings on the night. The Rockies were able to out hit the Braves 15-12 but unfortunately they were unable to come up with the big hit that they needed to get the victory. Edgmer Escalona took the loss for the Rockies and is now 1-4 on the season, while recently acquired Scott Downs picked up the win for the Braves.
The Scoring began on the night when Carlos Gonzalez plated Dexter Fowler with an RBI single in the first inning. Wilin Rosario added onto that in the second inning when he hit a solo home run to right field off of Brandon Beachy. Michael Cuddyer had a two RBI triple in the third inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Todd Helton to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Rockies, which looked even better with Jorge De La Rosa on the hill. The Braves answered back with six runs on the bottom half of the third inning which was highlighted by a two RBI bases loaded double by Chris Johnson and an RBI double by Andrelton Simmons. Nolan Arenado had a big error in the inning which could have possibly gotten the Rockies out of the inning after only allowing one run. When the dust settled after the third inning, the Rockies trailed the Braves 6-5. Arenado tried to atone for his error as he came to plate and hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning for the Rockies. They regained the lead 7-6 when DJ LeMahieu scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. The Braves answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning and grabbed the lead back when Dan Uggla had an RBI double and Joey Terdoslavich had an RBI single to give the Braves the 8-7 lead. The score remained the same heading into the ninth inning when Fredi Gonzalez elected not to utilize All Star closer Craig Kimbrel for a fourth consecutive day and went with Jordan Walden instead. Walden blew the save as Carlos Gonzalez picked up his fifth hit of the night that scored Dexter Fowler from the third. Matt Belisle worked a scoreless ninth inning but Edgmer Escalona came in to pitch the tenth inning and walked the first batter he faced in Dan Uggla and then gave up a game ending triple to Andrelton Simmons
Jorge De La Rosa was given a rude welcome to Atlanta and had his worst start of the year. He lasted just five innings allowing 10 hits, eight runs (five earned), two walks and struck out three batters. His ERA jumped from 2.97 to 3.21. The Rockies bullpen kept them in the game and gave them a chance to win the game late, but it was not meant to be and they were saddled with another loss. Manny Corpas, Josh Outman, Wilton Lopez and Matt Belisle worked four innings combined, allowing just one hit, no walks and struck out eight. Edgmer Escalona did not record an out in the 10th inning before allowing the walk off triple to Andrelton Simmons. The Rockies were led offensively by Carlos Gonzalez who went 5 for 5 in the game. All five hits were singles, but he did come up with the big hit in the ninth inning which sent the game into extra innings. Wilin Rosario also had three hits in the game including his 15th home run of the season. DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado each had two hits in the game.
