The Rockies are taking on the Marlins for the second game of their four game series. The Rockies dropped the first game last night by a final score of 3-1. Drew Pomeranz struggled again and failed to make it five innings as he fell to 0-4 on the season with a dreadful 8.10 ERA. His final line for the game was 4 1/3rd innings pitched allowing five hits, three runs, four walks and struck out two. He has struggled with his command at the Major League level, and that is something that will need to change in order for him to be successful and to eventually make it five complete innings during a game. The lone run for the Rockies was recorded off of the bat of Troy Tulowitzki who sent a towering shot deep to center field. It was his first home run since prior to heading onto the disabled list.
Tonight the Rockies will turn to Jhoulys Chacin to take the mound and face off with the Marlins. Chacin is having a good year and has posted a 9-4 record with a 3.50 ERA. Chacin has been hot as of late as he is 6-1 in his past seven starts and he has lowered his ERA from 4.52 to 3.50 during that same time frame. He has allowed two earned runs or less in six of those seven starts. He has posted a 6-2 record at home this year with a 4.48 ERA in 11 games started. The history between Chacin and current Marlins players is very limited but it does favor Miami slightly. They are hitting .333 with one home run and three RBI in 24 combined at bats. Chris Coghlan and Greg Dobbs are each 2 for 3 against Chacin in their careers. Chacin will look to remain hot as he starts off the second half of the season and will be looking to get the Rockies back on their winning ways.
Facing off against the Rockies tonight will be one of the up and coming pitchers in the National League in Jose Fernandez. Fernandez is a 20 year old flame thrower that has all of the tools needed in order to become great. He is still in the developmental stages of things but he has put together a fine season for the Marlins so far. On the year he has a 5-5 record with a very good 2.75 ERA. He should have a few more wins than he does, but the Marlins have struggled scoring all year long and his record has suffered because of it. He has struggled on the road however as his road starts have accounted for all five of his losses and only two victories in nine starts. He has a 4.17 ERA away from the pitcher friendly Marlins Park in Miami. This will be the first look at Fernandez for all of the Rockies players. You can expect that the Rockies hitters will take more pitches the first time around the order just so they can get a better look at his repertoire and what he is throwing. He has a big frame as he stands 6'2" 240 and he has an easy delivery that repeats very well.

First pitch for the game tonight between the Rockies and the Marlins is scheduled for 6:40 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will be looking to welcome Jose Fernandez to Coors Field and they will be looking to get to him early and often and not let up on the pressure. The Rockies are 2-2 currently on this home stand which will determine if they will be buyers or sellers when the trade deadline comes around at the end of this month. Something else to watch tonight is the Major League Debut of 21 year old Christian Yelich, and 22 year old Jake Marisnick. Both Marlins will be debuting in the outfield and will be looking to add some offensive firepower to the Marlins and show the fans a glimpse of what the future might hold for them.
