Rockies Game Recap: 7/24

The Rockies power outage continued again tonight against the Marlins, but thanks to a good pitching performance, The Rockies were able to come away with a 2-1 victory. Jorge De La Rosa picked up the victory for the Rockies and is now 10-5 on the year with a 2.97 ERA. De La Rosa has now gone eight straight starts allowing three earned runs or less and is 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in that stretch. The Rockies were outhit in the game by the Marlins but the Rockies pitchers were able to limit the damage when they were on the bases.

The scoring began with an RBI single by Nolan Arenado in the bottom of the second inning that drove in Todd Helton who had doubled to deep left in the at bat prior to him coming up. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when DJ LeMahieu hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Yorvit Torrealba which made it 2-0 Rockies. The Marlins tried mounting a rally in the 8th inning and they managed to score one run on a single by Donovan Solano which cut the deficit to 2-1. Matt Belisle buckled down and struck out the pinch hitter Justin Ruggiano to end the threat from the Marlins. Rex Brothers pitched the ninth inning and secured his sixth save of the season and shut the door on the Marlins hops of a comeback.

Jorge De La Rosa finished the game throwing six innings allowing five hits, no runs, one walk and struck out five batters. Edgmer Escalona, Josh Outman, and Wilton Lopez each recorded an out in the seventh inning and were able to keep the Marlins from scoring. Matt Belisle threw the eighth inning and his season long struggle continued as he allowed three hits and one run in the inning. Rex Brothers pitched the ninth and recorded his sixth save after issuing just one walk to Giancarlo Stanton and then got the next batter to hit into a weak fielder's choice.

The bullpen for the Rockies continues to be a roller coaster ride and it has been hard to determine which pitchers are going to be in the game. Matt Belisle has had a very disappointing year for the Rockies as he has been hit hard and it shows with his high ERA of 4.29. Wilton Lopez has also been a frustrating member of the Rockies bullpen as he has failed to keep runners off base and has allowed a good majority of them to score. His ERA is also above four at 4.25. In fact the Rockies have six members of their bullpen who have pitched for them this year who all have ERA's above four. They are Manny Corpas, Matt Belisle, Rob Scahill, Wilton Lopez, Edgmer Escalona, and Josh Outman. This is an issue that will need to be addressed at the trading deadline if the Rockies have any plans of making a run at the pennant this year.

The final game of the series with the Marlins will be an afternoon affair tomorrow at Coors Field with first pitch at 1:10 PM Mountain time. Juan Nicasio (6-4) of the Rockies will be taking on Nathan Eovaldi (2-1) of the Marlins. The Rockies will be looking to split the series vs the Marlins and also improve their second half record to above .500 with the win.
