The Rockies were stifled on offense last night against Eric Stults, who threw a four hit complete game allowing just one run. He was magnificent and was able to work away from the power of the Rockies hitters and he changed speeds effectively which made a lot of ground balls as a result of that. The Padres did not do much better on offense as they got an RBI triple from Alexi Amarista in the third inning and then Amarista again got the Rockies with an RBI single off of Wilton Lopez in the seventh inning. Chacin pitched well but without any offensive help he was saddled with the loss after giving up one run in six innings of work. The Rockies fought in the ninth inning and scored one run off of Stults but Josh Rutledge struck out to end the game with the tying run on first base. The Padres ended their 10 game losing streak with the win last night.
Pitching for the Rockies tonight will be Jorge De La Rosa. On the year, De La Rosa has an 8-5 record with a very good 3.19 ERA. He took the loss in his last start against the Diamondbacks as he allowed three runs in 5 1/3rd innings of work. He gave up seven hits, did not walk anybody and struck out five on the day. It was an average start but nothing to get excited about and he is hoping that he can pitch better tonight against the Padres. De La Rosa is 3-4 on the year with a 3.22 ERA in 10 games started on the road this year. This will be his second start at PETCO Park this year as he faced the Padres on April 14th and threw six scoreless innings allowing just two hits and struck out seven and picked up the victory for his efforts. Current Padres hitters are hitting just .259 against De La Rosa with two home runs and six RBI in 108 at bats. A couple of injured Padres have done the most damage against De La Rosa as Jedd Gyorko has not been retired by him in four trips to the plate. Cameron Maybin is 4-9 with a home run and an RBI against De La Rosa in their career match ups. He will need to work hard on making sure that he gets the ball over the plate and does not get too fine with his pitches. At PETCO Park at night the ball does not travel as well so he can get away with leaving the ball a little further up and relying on his defense to make plays behind him.
Andrew Cashner will be called upon to face the Rockies tonight. The hard throwing right hander has had a very good year and has transitioned nicely into the role of starting pitcher. On the year he has posted a 5-4 record with a 3.82 ERA. He was chased out of the game early in his last start against the Nationals as he lasted only two innings allowing five hits, issued three walks and did not strike out anybody. It was easily his worst start on the year and it is something that he is hoping he will not repeat anymore. Cashner has been great at home this year as he has a 4-1 record with a very good 2.38 ERA in six starts. He is holding opponents to a .226 average against him when he is on the mound at PETCO Park. He made one other start against the Rockies this year and that was on June 6th at Coors Field. He went seven innings allowing seven hits, three runs, two walks and struck out four. Current Rockies hitters are hitting .345 against Cashner with two home runs and 12 RBI in 55 combined at bats. DJ LeMahieu is three for four against him with a double. Michael Cuddyer is two for five with a home run and three RBI. Cashner has great stuff and he is working on figuring out how to change things up so he can effectively pitch to a team when it comes to the second and third time around in the order. He has been getting hit a little bit more later in the game because he has failed to change up his patterns throughout the game.
