Rockies Make Trade to Bolster Rotation

On Monday the Rockies announced that they have required Armando Galarraga from the Cincinnati Reds. The Rockies gave up AA pitcher Parker Frazier who was sent down to the Tulsa Drillers last week after being knocked around to the tune of a 10.67 ERA in nine appearances for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Galarraga is 31 years old and will report to the Sky Sox to work at the AAA level. He has put together a very good year at AAA for the Louisville Bats as he has compiled a 6-6 record with a 2.98 ERA. His best year came with Detroit in 2008 when he finished the season 13-7 with a 3.73 ERA. Galarraga has a career record of 26-34 with a combined 4.58 ERA. He is known by most people because of the perfect game that was blown by Jim Joyce on a play at first base that would have secured his place in history. After that game he has not been the same pitcher, however he may have figured something out this year in AAA with an ERA under three.

The Rockies may not be done making moves as they are looking to bolster their rotation and get ready to make a run at the division title in the second half of the season. Perhaps the Rockies would be looking to take a chance on former top prospect Jair Jurrjens. Jurrjens was designated for assignment last week by the Orioles. Jurrjens was one of the best pitching prospects in the game heading into 2008 with the Atlanta Braves. He did not disappoint as he finished the 2008 season with a 13-10 record and a 3.68 ERA. He had an even better sophomore season as he went 14-10 with a 2.60 ERA. He was building a nice career but ran into a road block in 2012 with the Braves and really struggled on the mound. He lost confidence and it showed as he went 3-4 with a 6.89 ERA. He is only 27 years old and still has all of the stuff that made him a top prospect a few years ago. He just needs a chance to earn his confidence back. If he can do that then he would be a huge addition heading down the stretch. He has posted good career numbers with a record of 53-37 and a 3.63 ERA.
