Rockies Game Preview: 7/9

The Rockies are taking on the Padres in game two of their series after they took game one 4-2 last night in San Diego. Tyler Chatwood picked up his fifth victory of the season and Rafael Betancourt picked up his 12th save of the season when he slammed the door shut on the Padres in the ninth inning. Wilin Rosario, Michael Cuddyer and Jonathan Herrera each had two hits last night including a two run double by Rosario in the first inning that got the Rockies off to a hot start.

Jhoulys Chacin will be taking the mound tonight and he will be looking for his sixth straight victory on the season. He has not lost or taken a no decision since he took a no decision against the Padres on June 6th. He has been pitching great and he will look to keep it going at PetCo Park tonight. He has gone at least seven innings in 3 of his last four starts and he has not allowed a run in two of those starts. Chacin has been very good on the road this year as he has a 2-1 record with a  2.05 ERA in five starts away from home. Chacin will be making his fourth start this year against the Padres and on the year he has a 2-0 record with a 4.24 ERA. Chacin has done well in his career when facing players on the current Padres lineup. He is holding them to a .220 average with one home run and 10 RBI in 109 combined at bats. The one home run hit off Chacin belongs to Will Venable but he is 2-15 against him total. Chacin will be looking to control the strike zone again in this start and give himself a chance to win his sixth straight decision.

Eric Stults will be taking the mound to face off against the Rockies tonight in San Diego. Stults on the year has a 6-7 record with a decent 3.70 ERA. He has been the most consistent starter for the Padres this year and has turned in several quality starts and given the Padres a good chance to win the game each time he takes the ball. He has taken a loss in each of his last two starts as he has been struggling with leaving too many pitches up in the zone that are being hit hard. He has been great at home as he has a 3-1 record with a good 2.85 ERA in seven starts at home. He has made one other start against the Rockies this year and turned in a brilliant performance on his way to the victory. He faced off against the Rockies at Coors Field on June 8th and he went seven innings allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned), walked four and struck out five. It was his fifth victory on the season as the Padres beat the Rockies 4-2 in the game. The history is limited between current Rockies and Stults, but in 49 combined at bats, Rockies hitters are hitting .265 with five doubles and three RBI.

Carlos Gonzalez is missing his second straight game tonight as he is recovering from a sprained right middle finger which he suffered on Sunday. Roy Oswalt was placed on the DL with his strained hamstring and Charlie Blackmon was recalled from AAA. The Rockies will have to call up another starter to fill Oswalt's spot in the rotation which is on Friday.
