Rockies Beat Padres in First Game of Series

The Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres tonight by the final score of  4-2. Tyler Chatwood turned in a quality start and picked up his fifth victory of the season. He is now 5-2 with a 2.74 ERA. Offensively they were led by Wilin Rosario, Michael Cuddyer and Jonathan Herrera who each had two hits in the game. Edison took the loss against the Rockies and is now 0-3 against the Rockies this year. He is 6-7 on the year with a 5.25 ERA.

The Rockies got off to a fast start in the game against Edison Volquez as they scored two runs in the first inning off of a double by Wilin Rosario. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Rockies were able to manufacture two more runs. Jonathan Herrera laid down a suicide squeeze that scored Nolan Arenado. Corey Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning that scored Tyler Colvin from third base. Chatwood ran into some trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning after he had pretty much cruised through six scoreless innings. He allowed a single to Jesus Guzman to leadoff the inning. Chatwood then issued a walk to Logan Forsythe. He battled back to strike out Will Venable and then induced a fly out from Chris Denorfia. Chase Headley pinch hit for the pitchers spot and singled to load the bases, he then walked Everth Cabrera to force in a run. Weiss came and got Chatwood after that and brought in Rex Brothers to try and prevent the Padres from getting any more runs in the inning. Kyle Blanks was the first hitter Brothers faced and he hit a chopper to third and Arenado was indecisive on where he wanted to go with the ball and by the time he fired it to first Blanks was already there so that allowed another run to score. Brothers got the next out and the rally was stopped. Rafael Betancourt made things interesting in the ninth inning as he gave up a long double to Chris Denorfia with one out and then after striking out Nick Hundley he walked Everth Cabrera. He then slammed the door shut when he induced a fly out of Mark Kotsay to end the game.

The final line for Chatwood on the day was 6 2/3rds innings pitched allowing five hits, two runs, three walks and struck out four batters. Rafael Betancourt nailed down his 12th save of the season for the Rockies. The Padres have now lost 10 straight games and have fallen to 40-50 on the season. The Rockies get back on track tonight and gained a game on the Diamondbacks who lost to the Dodgers tonight so they are now only four and a half games back. The Rockies improved their record to 9-2 on the year against the Padres.

Game two of the series will be tomorrow night with first pitch at 8:10 PM Mountain time. Jhoulys Chacin will be taking the mound for the Rockies and will be looking for his ninth win on the season. The Padres will be sending Eric Stults to the mound who has been one of the most consistent starters for the Padres all year.
