Rockies Drop Finale With Giants

The Colorado Rockies were unable to overcome a rough debut from Drew Pomeranz and ultimately lost the series finale with the Giants 5-2. Drew Pomeranz mad his much anticipated debut for the Rockies and was sub par in his outing today. He lasted just 4 1/3rd innings allowing seven hits, four runs, four walks and struck out five. He looked decent through the first four innings but the wheels fell off when he reached the fifth inning. In the fifth he gave up back to back hits and then an error allowed a run to score and then gave up a two run home run to Hunter Pence. He was rattled after the home run and issued back to back walks and was then taken out of the game by Walt Weiss. A disappointing start to the 2013 season for Drew Pomeranz.

The Rockies were stifled offensively by Madison Bumgarner on the day. Bumgarner went seven innings allowing just four hits, one run, three walks and had five strikeouts in the game. Carlos Gonzalez regained sole possession of the home run lead for the National League as he took Bumgarner deep in the 6th inning. Michael Cuddyer is the bright spot for the Rockies today as he was able to extend his hitting streak to 27 games. He made it interesting as he went hitless in his first three at bats of the game and in his final at bat he hit a single up the middle much to the delight of the hometown crowd who gave him a standing ovation when he reached first base. Cuddyer has now also reached base in 46 straight games.

The Rockies have a much needed off day tomorrow and will be taking on the red hot Dodgers led by rookie phenom Yasiel Puig on Tuesday. The Rockies will be hoping that the off day will rejuvenate their bats as well as heal up some of the ailing Rockies and rest the bullpen which has been used with great frequency so far this season.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/30

The Rockies are looking for the sweep against the Giants today and they will be trying to inch closer to the division lead. The Rockies took care of business on Saturday with a walk off victory in the ninth inning from Nolan Arenado. Arenado hit a walk off single that scored Josh Rutledge from second base and gave the Rockies the 2-1 victory and got their record back to .500. Jorge De La Rosa was pitching well but had to leave before throwing a pitch in the seventh inning due to a bruise on his left thumb. Rafael Betancourt picked up the victory in his first game back from the disabled list.

Drew Pomeranz will be making his 2013 debut with the Rockies today and he will be looking to show everyone that he is ready to remain a Major League pitcher. He spent the majority of the season with the Rockies last year but did not have much success. Last year he had an awful 2-9 record with a 4.93 ERA. He has worked hard in the offseason and his hard work has paid off so far this year in AAA. He is 8-1 with a 4.20 ERA this year and he currently leads the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts with 96. He still has some control issues but that is something that the organization is hoping will come with time and experience. There is limited history between Pomeranz and Giants hitters, but Pomeranz has done well in previous match ups against them. The Giants are hitting just .200 against him with two home runs and six RBI in 25 combined at bats. Buster Posey is 2-2 against Pomeranz with one home run and two RBI. Pomeranz will be looking to do a couple of things today that he failed to do last season. One is to be able to control the strike zone. He struggled throwing strikes last year he issued 46 walks in just over 96 innings of work. He will also be looking to keep the ball down in the zone. Last year when he left the ball up he paid for it by giving up the long ball. He allowed 14 home runs last year which was high for the amount of innings he threw. If he can do those two things then he has a chance to become a great pitcher because he has great stuff, he just needs to learn how to become a better pitcher.

Madison Bumgarner will be facing off against the Rockies when he takes the mound on Sunday. On the year Bumgarner is 7-5 with a 3.20 ERA. The 23 year old lefty is quickly becoming one of the best starters in the National League and he has the ability to dominate every time he takes the mound. He took the loss in his last start against the Dodgers despite pitching pretty well. He threw seven innings allowing five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and he struck out five. Prior to that he had won three straight decisions. On the road he has a 4-4 record with a 3.57 ERA in nine games started. Rockies hitters are familiar with Bumgarner and have hit him well in their previous match ups. Rockies hitters are hitting a combined .304 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 161 at bats. Carlos Gonzalez has hit him very well as he is 10-27 with three home runs and six RBI. Michael Cuddyer has a good chance of extending his hitting streak as he is hitting .500 (3-6) against him with one double and one RBI. He has faced the Rockies two times this year and is 1-1. He has failed to make it out of the sixth inning in wither start. On April 8th he went 5 2/3rd innings allowing five hits and two runs and took the win. On May 17th he faced the Rockies at Coors Field and was severely roughed up on the day. He lasted just 4 2/3rd innings allowing eight hits, nine runs (seven earned), two walks and struck out four. In his career against the Rockies he has a 6-4 record with a good 3.12 ERA.

The Giants lineup for the game today is as follows:
1. Andres Torres, LF
2. Tony Abreu, 2B
3. Buster Posey, 1B
4. Hunter Pence, RF
5. Pablo Sandoval, 3B
6. Juan Perez, CF
7. Guillermo Quiroz, C
8. Brandon Crawford, SS
9. Madison Bumgarner, P

The Rockies lineup for the game today is as follows:
1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
2. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
7. Tyler Colvin, CF
8. Josh Rutledge, SS
9. Drew Pomeranz, P

First pitch for the game today is scheduled for 2:10 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Walk Off A Winner!

Nolan Arenado played the part of the hero in their 2-1 victory against the Giants this afternoon. Arenado took a 2-2 pitch from Jeremy Affeldt back up the middle that allowed Josh Rutledge to score the game winning run. Rutledge pinch ran for Todd Helton who drew a two out walk against Affeldt to keep the inning alive and allow Arenado to come up to bat. The Rockies had a good pitching performance on the day from Jorge De La Rosa but he was taken out of the game before throwing a pitch in the seventh inning due to a bruise on his left thumb. Three relievers worked in the seventh inning to get three outs and Matt Belisle worked an inning and a third of scoreless baseball which will hopefully get him going back in the right direction on the mound moving forward. In his first game back from the disabled list, Rafael Betancourt picked up the victory as he worked a perfect ninth inning. He is now 2-3 on the year with a 3.05 ERA.

Michael Cuddyer continues to roll and his hitting streak is now at 26 games after he picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning that got the Rockies the early lead. The Rockies were only able to get four hits on the day as Matt Cain shut down the Rockies after the second inning of the game. Matt Cain finished his day by retiring 20 straight hitters. The Rockies hitters were unable to come up with the big hits again today but they were facing a great pitcher in Cain that kept them in check for the majority of the game. Luckily the Rockies pitchers were able to keep the game tied and give the Rockies a chance to win the game with one swing of the bat in the ninth inning, which is just what Arenado was able to do.

The Rockies will be going for the sweep tomorrow afternoon as Drew Pomeranz will be making his 2013 season debut for the Rockies. He will be facing off against a very tough left hander in Madison Bumgarner. First pitch for the game tomorrow is scheduled for 2:10 PM Mountain time.

Chacin Dominates in Series Opener Against Giants

Jhoulys Chacin was marvelous on the mound on Friday night and he kept the Giants hitters off balance all night long. The Rockies held onto the lead for Chacin and beat the Giants 4-1. He finished the game going eight innings allowing just three hits, no runs, three walks and struck out three batters. This was easily the best game of the season for Chacin and he could have been left out there to finish the game off as he was only at 95 pitches after those eight innings. He really never was under much pressure throughout the game and allowed just one hit after the fourth inning of the game. He cruised to the finish line and left his team in the drivers seat for the victory and hopefully will break them out of the slump that they have been in both offensively and defensively. Chacin is now 7-3 on the year and he lowered his season ERA to 3.59. Rex Brothers came into the game in the ninth inning to finish the game. Brothers gave up a lead off home run to Buster Posey which ended his streak of innings pitched without allowing a home run. He then struck out the next three hitters but Hunter Pence reached when he struck out and the ball got away from Wilin Rosario. He got a weak ground ball to end the game and sure upt the Rockies 4-1 victory.

Michael Cuddyer was able to extend his hitting streak tonight when he took Barry Zito deep for a two run home run in the third inning. He took the pitch from Zito over the auxiliary scoreboard in right field. He has now hit safely in 25 straight games and he has reached base safely in 44 straight games. Both of those are team records which he continues to extend each night. The Rockies scratched out 13 hits against the Giants, but they were only able to push across 4 runs and they did not score in the game after the fourth inning. They did not hit very well with runners in scoring position and if it were not for the help of home runs by Michael Cuddyer and Wilin Rosario, then this would have been a much different game. It was good to see the bats come alive but the same problem is still evident and the Rockies are not coming up with the big hits that they need to pull away from teams. Either way the Rockies still got the victory on the night.

Game two of the series will be an afternoon affair on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:10 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will send Jorge De La Rosa to the mound to face off against Matt Cain for the Giants.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/28

The Rockies have been scuffling as of late and they will be trying to turn it around against their division foe in the Giants as they begin a three game series with them on Friday night. The Rockies are heading into the series having lost eight of their last ten games and they have not been getting it done on both sides of the ball. The pitching has been sub par and their offense has been unable to come up with the big hits that they need to stay in the game. They are trying to keep their head above water and stay within striking distance of the division crown until Troy Tulowitzki comes back from his rib injury. The only player right now who is playing to his full potential. Josh Rutledge needs to figure it out fast or he is going to find himself back in the Minor Leagues. Going into the game the Rockies were 30-3 when they held the lead in the seventh inning. They are now 30-4 after the loss on Thursday to the Mets.

Jhoulys Chacin will have the task of taking on the Giants offense on Friday night. On the year Chacin has a 6-3 record with a respectable 3.92 ERA. He has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last three starts and he has secured the victory in each of those starts as well. His last start was magnificent against the Nationals as he went seven innings allowing only five hits, no runs, one walk and had three strikeouts in the game. Perhaps the most impressive part of his start was that he only needed 94 pitches to complete seven innings. He showed good command of his pitches throughout the game which was good to see from him as he has battled some control issues during his career. He is also showing that he is controlling his emotions on the mound this year much better than he has in years past. In previous years one hit or run could send him in a tail spin for the game, but he has been working hard on keeping his cool and taking the game one batter at a time. Chacin is 4-2 at home but he has a high ERA at 4.92 in nine games started. He keeps the ball in the ballpark and has only allowed two home runs on the season. Opponents are hitting for a .270 average against Chacin at home compared to a .229 average when he is pitching at away ballparks. Giants hitters have done well in the past against Chacin, but he is a much different pitcher this year. They are hitting a combined .307 average with two home runs and 12 RBI in 114 at bats. Chacin has had one start against San Francisco this year and it did not go well for him. On May 16th Chacin faced off against the Giants and took the loss after he threw 5 1/3rd innings allowing nine hits, eight runs, two walks and two strikeouts. It was his worst start of the year and he allowed three earned runs more than he has in any start. Hopefully that was just a fluke start and not something that we should see again against the Giants. Chacin will be looking to build momentum from his last start and make sure that he keeps the ball in the ballpark and gives the Rockies a good chance to win.

Barry Zito will be the starting pitcher for the Giants as they come into Coors Field on Friday night. On the year Zito has a 4-5 record with a 4.40 ERA. He pitched well in his last start against the Marlins but he had no offensive support in the night so he ended up taking a no decision. In that game he threw seven innings allowing six hits, one run, two walks and struck out five. Zito has been awful on the road this year and has a 0-4 record with an astronomical 11.28 ERA. He has three starts against the Rockies this year and he is 1-1 with a 4.34 ERA. At Coors Field he had a rough game as he took the loss going 5 2/3rd innings allowing 11 hits, five runs, two walks and had four strikeouts. He has been good against the Rockies in the past couple of year but this year it seems as though the Rockies hitters have figured him out and they are making him pay for the mistakes that he makes over the plate. Rockies hitters are hitting a combined .256 against Zito with four home runs and 20 RBI in 246 at bats against the veteran left hander. Carlos Gonzalez has had the most luck against him as he is hitting .353 with two home runs and nine RBI in 34 at bats. He will be trying to change his luck against the Rockies this year but they are hoping that they can hit him around pretty good again and get themselves going back in the right direction.

The Giants lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Gregor Blanco, CF
2. Marco Scutaro, 2B
3. Buster Posey, C
4. Pablo Sandoval, 3B
5. Hunter Pence, RF
6. Brandon Belt, 1B
7. Andres Torres, LF
8. Brandon Crawford, SS
9. Barry Zito, P

The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
2. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
7. Tyler Colvin, CF
8. Josh Rutledge, SS
9. Jhoulys Chacin, P

First pitch for the game tonight is at 6:40 PM Mountain time. With their loss on Thursday the Rockies dropped to two games under .500 for the first time all year. They will be trying to make sure that it is as low as they go in the standings.

Pomeranz to Join the Rockies Rotation

Drew Pomeranz will be joining the Rockies on Sunday and will be replacing Juan Nicasio in the starting rotation. Pomeranz has had an up and down year at the AAA level but he has had three good starts in a row and the Rockies hope that he has figured out a lot of the issues that he had at the Major League level last year. Nicasio was optioned to AAA in order to make room for the return of Rafael Betancourt who returned from the disabled list on Friday. Nicasio will look to get some work in at the Minor League level and work on his secondary pitches and making them more of a weapon that he can use as a starting pitcher. If it does not work then we could see Nicasio in the bullpen if he makes it back to the Major Leagues.

(Drew Pomeranz- MILB)

Pomeranz will be making his 2013 debut on Sunday against the Giants when he will be facing off with Madison Bumgarner. He will be hoping to have better success this year and he will be working on controlling the strike zone and keeping the ball in ballpark in order to give the Rockies the best chance to win.

Rockies Lose to Mets in Makeup Game

The Rockies dropped another close game to the Mets today as they were unable to hold a one run lead and eventually lost 3-2. The Rockies had a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning when they brought in Matt Belisle to try and hold the lead and get it to Rex Brothers in the ninth inning. Belisle struggled again and gave up a two run home run to Marlon Byrd which was the difference in the game. Belisle is now 4-5 on the year with a terrible 4.95 ERA. He was great in 2012 but it has been a different story this year as he has come into several games and gave up leads or made them closer then the game should have been. He has been one of the biggest disappointments for the Rockies this year.

Michael Cuddyer continues to swing a hot bat and he picked up three more hits today. He now has multiple hits in four straight games and his hitting streak is now at 24 games and he has also reached base safely in 43 games. He passed Dante Bichette for the franchise record for a hitting streak when he hit a single in his first at bat today. The way he is swinging the bat, I am not sure who is going to be able to stop him. Wilin Rosario also had two hits on the day and he is finally starting to break out of his slump that he has been in for a while.

The Rockies will begin a three game series with the Giants starting with their game at 6:40 PM Mountain time on Friday Night. That match up will be Jhoulys Chacin vs. Barry Zito. In the series the Rockies will also face Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner who have been notoriously tough against the Rockies. If the Rockies want to break out of their slump, then they will have to do it against some of the best pitching in their division.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/27

The Rockies are taking on the New York Mets tonight for their makeup game from the snow out that occurred on April 17th. The Rockies are happy to be back at home as they had an awful road trip finishing it going 2-7 and being swept in both American league ballparks they went to. Michael Cuddyer kept the game close yesterday with his two home runs, but the Rockies still fell to the Red Sox 5-3.

Tyler Chatwood will be taking the mound tonight for the Rockies as they face off against the Mets. Chatwood on the year is 4-1 with a very good 2.22 ERA. He had a good start in his last start against the Nationals as he went six innings allowing four hits, one run, two walks and struck out four hitters. He took a no decision in the game however as the Rockies offense struggled to get anything going against his counterpart Stephen Strasburg. Chatwood is 2-0 at home this year with a 3.57 ERA in four games started. The history is limited between Chatwood and the players on the Mets team but in 18 combined at bats the Mets hitters are batting .278 with one double and three strikeouts.

The Rockies offense will be trying to get back on track against Mets pitcher Jeremy Hefner. Hefner on the year is 2-6 with a 3.89 ERA. He got a win in his last start against the Phillies when he went six innings allowing 10 hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and struck out six. On the road this year he has posted a 2-3 record with a 4.83 ERA in seven starts. Only five players on the Rockies roster have faced Hefner and each of them only have one at bat against him. Dexter Fowler and Troy Tulowitzki each are 1-1 against him with a home run but neither of those two are in the lineup for tonight's game.

The Mets lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Eric Young Jr, LF
2. Omar Quintanilla, SS
3. Daniel Murphy, 2B
4. Marlon Byrd, RF
5. Josh Satin, 1B
6. Zach Lutz, 3B
7. Juan Lagares, CF
8. Anthony Recker, C
9. Jeremy Hefner, P

The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Corey Dickerson, CF
2. Josh Rutledge, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Todd Helton, 1B
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B
8. Jonathan Herrera, SS
9. Tyler Chatwood, P

First pitch for the game tonight is at 4:10 PM Mountain time. Eric Young Jr. will be making his first return back to Coors Field to take on his former team. Look for him to get a big hand as he returns, and I am sure he will be trying to hurt his former employer and show them what they are missing.

Rockies Swept by Boston

The Rockies fall under .500 with a 39-40 record with the loss to the Red Sox today by a final score of 5-3. Roy Oswalt got off to a rough start as he gave up three runs in the first inning and threw 32 pitches in the inning. He settled down a bit later on in the game but gave up Boston's other two runs in the third inning. He finished the game going six innings allowing nine hits, five runs one walk and struck out five. The Rockies jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Wilin Rosario drove in Carlos Gonzalez in the first inning, but it was a lead that the Rockies did not hold for very long.

John Lackey threw a great game and the Rockies hitters were unable to figure him out throughout the day. He finished the day going seven innings allowing eight hits, two runs, no walks and struck out 12 batters. He was fantastic and was able to limit the damage when he did allow base runners.

Michael Cuddyer had a big game for the Rockies and provided the rest of the offense for the team. Cuddyer drilled a home run in the sixth inning off of John Lackey which sailed over the Green Monster. He then came up in the 8th inning and hit another home run this time off of Junichi Tazawa. He has now tied the club record with a 23 game hitting streak and broke the team record for most consecutive games reaching base with 42. He will try and break the tie with Dante Bichette for the hitting streak when the Rockies take on the Mets tomorrow night at Coors Field.

The Rockies finished the Road trip going 2-7 and were swept by the Blue Jays and the Red Sox. The Rockies are now 3-12 against American League opponents this year. The Rockies will be looking to get things back on track as they begin a seven game home stand tomorrow.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/26

The Rockies will be taking on the Boston Red Sox today and putting an end to a road trip that has not been very kind to them. Heading into the game today the Rockies are just 2-6 on the trip so they are lloking forward to getting back to Coors Field tomorrow to take on the Mets in a makeup game from one that was postponed earlier in the year. The Rockies were beaten 11-4 yesterday against the Red Sox in a game that saw the Rockies pitching staff give up 20 hits to the opposition. Juan Nicasio took the loss in the game in what was one of the worst starts of the year for the Rockies pitcher. Today's game will wrap up the short two game stop in Boston.

Roy Oswalt will be making his second start as a member of the Rockies when he takes the hill today against the Red Sox. Oswalt had an up and down debut for the Rockies as he took the loss but had 11 strikeouts on the day against the Washington Nationals. He lasted only five innings giving up nine hits, four runs and did not walk any batters. After the game Oswalt even admitted that he may have had too many strikeouts on the day as he was hoping to work later into the ballgame, which is something that he has vowed to improve upon moving forward. He looked like the old Roy Oswalt who was a three time all star during the prime of his career. His fastball worked between 92-94 and it had great movement on it which was something that had decreased in his last few years of work in Philadelphia and Texas. The location of his pitches was good for the most part and even though he gave up a fair number of hits on the day, you could tell that he was getting back into the swing of pitching at the Major League level. He also showed that he still has one of the better 12-6 curveballs in the game of baseball. It is a devastating pitch to both right and left handed batters and is something that he will use to not only get outs but also induce weak ground balls and pop ups when needed. Only two Red Sox players have seen Oswalt for more than a few at bats and those players are Stephen Drew and Shane Victorino. Drew is 9-21 against him with three doubles and one RBI. Victorino is 5-15 in his career against Oswalt with one double. Oswalt will be looking to continue his development and show improvement on his last start. He will be trying to control the counts and work deeper into the game. He will also be looking to limit the amount of base runners that he faces and decrease the amount of hits that he allows. If he can do that then he will have a very good chance at picking up his first victory as a member of the Rockies.

John Lackey will be taking the hill for the Red Sox and will have the task of facing off against the talented Rockies offense. On the year Lackey is 4-5 with a good 3.03 ERA. He took a no decision in his last game out against the Tigers when he went seven innings allowing seven hits, two runs, one walk and struck out five.  Lackey has not lost a game in nearly a month but he has not received much run support so he has been unable to improve his record by very much during that span. Current Rockies hitters have a combined .306 average against Lackey in 49 at bats. Michael Cuddyer has had the most success off of him as he is 6-19 with three home runs and five RBI in their career match ups. Lackey will be trying to contain Cuddyer and end his hitting streak at 22 games but he knows that will be a tough task as Michael Cuddyer has been swinging one of the hottest bats in all of baseball.

The Red Sox lineup for this afternoon's game against the Rockies is as follows:
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Shane Victorino, RF
3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Mike Napoli, 1B
6. Daniel Nava, LF
7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
8. Stephen Drew, SS
9. Jose Iglesias, 3B

The Rockies lineup for the game against the Red Sox is as follows:
1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
2. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
3. Michael Cuddyer, RF
4. Wilin Rosario, DH
5. Todd Helton, 1B
6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
7. Tyler Colvin, CF
8. Yorvit Torrealba, C
9. Josh Rutledge, SS

First pitch for the game today is set for 2:05 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will be looking to end their road trip on a high note and build some momentum before heading back home to begin a seven game home stand against with one game against the Mets, Three against the Giants and three against the Dodgers.

Rockies Lose Game One in Boston

Juan Nicasio really struggled tonight which lead to a blow out victory for the Red Sox at Fenway Park by the final score of 11-4. Nicasio could not by an out if his life depended on it and finished the game after throwing just 2 1/3rd innings on the night. He allowed 12 hits, seven runs (six earned) one walk and struck out two. Surprisingly it could have been worse as he was able to wiggle out of a bases loaded jam with only one out in the first inning. Nicasio now drops to 4-4 on the year and his ERA now sits at 5.31.

The Red Sox pounded out a season high 20 hits and every starter for them had at least one hit and seven out of the nine starters had two hits or more. The Rockies had a fairly good offensive night as they scored four runs on 11 hits but unfortunately they were in too deep of a hole to ever make it a close game. Michael Cuddyer went 2-5 to extend his hitting streak to 22 straight games. Wilin Roario and Nolan Arenado each had three hits.

The final game of the two game series will be played tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 2:05 PM Mountain time. Roy Oswalt of the Rockies will be taking on John Lackey of the Red Sox.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/25

The Rockies are in Boston today and will be playing a two game series with the Red Sox at historic Fenway Park. The Rockies had a rough start to the road trip as they lost five straight but have won the last two and will be looking to win a couple more before heading home on Thursday. The Red Sox got off to a great start this year with a 20-8 record, but over their last 50 games they have managed to only break even at 25-25. Their bullpen has given them some issues and Andrew Bailey is no longer the closer for the team. The Rockies are hoping that the Red Sox remain mediocre at least for the next two games so they can continue building their record on the plus side of the .500 mark.

Juan Nicasio will be taking on the Red Sox as they begin their short two game series against each other. Nicasio comes into the game today with a 4-3 record and a 4.78 ERA on the year. He took the loss in his last game out against the Blue Jays as he was only able to go five innings allowing four hits four runs (two earned) and walked one and struck out three. He worked deeper into counts which drove his pitch count up to 97 after just five innings of work. Nicasio has lloked like he is on the verge of breaking into the next level but the failure for him to utilize his secondary pitches as out pitches is really holding him back from taking the next step. On the road this year Nicasio is 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA in eight games started. Nobody on the Red Sox roster has ever faced Nicasio which favors Nicasio at least through the first time through the order. His fastball is very deceptive and has a lot of movement so the Red Sox hitters will be surprised when they see it for the first time.

Facing off against the Rockies is Ryan Dempster. Dempster has had a rough year this year and is 4-8 with a 4.23 ERA. He took the loss in his last start against the Rays as he went six innings allowing eight hits, three runs, two walks and struck out three. At home this year Dempster is 3-6 with a 4.23 ERA in 11 games started. Rockies hitters are hitting a robust .373 against Dempster in his career in 51 combined at bats. Leading the way is Todd Helton who is 10-24 against him with three home runs and six RBI. Dempster will be looking to string together a couple of decent starts to try and get back on track for the season.

The Red Sox lineup for tonight's game is as follows:
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Shane Victorino, RF
3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
4. David Ortiz, DH

Get to Know Corey Dickerson

Recently the Rockies called up one of their top outfield prospects in the Minor Leagues. Corey Dickerson has hit well at every level and earned his call up through hard work and production on the field. In his first start of his career he went 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI in Saturday's victory against the Nationals.

(MLB)

Primarily a left fielder, Dickerson bats left and throws right. He was born on May 22nd 1989, he is 6’2”  and weighs 210 pounds. Dickerson was selected in the 8th round of the 2010 draft out of Meridian Community College. Dickerson is well thought of by the organization as he was also drafted in the 29th round of the 2009 draft but declined to sign and went back to school for another season. He made his debut in 2010 for the Casper Ghosts and had a tremendous start to his career by hitting .348 with 22 doubles, nine triples, 13 home runs and 61 RBI in just 69 games on the season. He was moved up to Asheville in 2011 where he had a monster power year for the Tourists. He finished the year hitting .282 with 27 doubles, 32 home runs and 87 RBI. He began the 2012 season with Modesto before being called up halfway through the season to Tulsa to finish the year off. He cooled off a bit when he reached Tulsa but still hit for power and showed the ability to drive the ball where it is pitched. Combined on the year he hit .304 with 40 doubles, seven triples, 22 home runs and 81 RBI.

He has a big swing from the left side of the plate and has the ability to keep the barrel of the bat in the zone for an extended amount of time giving him the best chance to make good contact with the ball. His swing is smooth and his long stance allows him to stay back on the pitches. His weight distribution is good and he loads quickly and accelerates his hands to the ball quickly. He has a tendency to have too much vertical movement in his approach that can change his eye level and cause him to lose sight of the ball as it comes in, this can lead to higher strikeout numbers. He still is developing as a professional outfielder and needs to work on his actions getting around the ball. He made nine errors in the outfield during the 2012 season which is something that he will need to work on if he plans in becoming a key corner outfielder in the future for the Rockies. His swing and overall approach at the plate has drawn many comparisons to Orioles outfielder Nate McLouth early on in his career.

(Nate McLouth on left, Corey Dickerson on right)

Time will tell if Dickerson has what it takes to make an impact at the Major League level, but right now all signs point to him being a reliable source of offense for many years to come. His power numbers will most likely not be as prominent in the Majors as they were in the Minors, but his average should remain around the .300 mark after the transition. Unless some injuries happen, he will not see significant playing time this year in the Majors but he can make a statement and prove that he belongs and perhaps he could earn a spot for next year.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/23

The Rockies finally broke out of their losing streak as they defeated the Nationals yesterday afternoon 7-   1.The offense broke out of the slump as every Rockies starter including Jhoulys Chacin had at least one hit on the day. DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado each had solo home runs and Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Cuddyer has now reached base safely in 39 straight games. The day belonged to Rockies rookie Corey Dickerson as he made his Major League debut. He did not waste any time getting into the action as he slashed a RBI double into the left centerfield gap in the first inning for his first hit as a Major Leaguer. He finished the day going 2-4 with two doubles. The future of the Rockies looks very bright for many years to come.

Jorge De La Rosa will be taking the mound for the Rockies in the series finale today. De La Rosa is 7-4 on the year with a 3.21 ERA. His last time out he threw the ball great but ended up taking a no decision on the day. He went seven innings against the Blue Jays and allowed only one hit while walking three and striking out four. On the road this year De La Rosa has a 2-3 record with a 3.04 ERA in eight games started. He has not received the run support on the road that he has gotten at home, but he has been consistent wherever he takes the mound and has given the Rockies a chance to win each time out. De La Rosa took the loss on June 12th against the Nationals when he gave up 3 runs in 5 1/3rd innings pitched. Current Nationals hitters are hitting .259 against De La Rosa with two home runs and 11 RBI in 58 combined at bats. Jorge will be trying to build on the performance that he had in Toronto. If he can string together a couple of quality starts together then it will go a long ways for building his confidence up for the rest of the season.

The Nationals will be sending Ross Detwiler to the mound to face the Rockies in the afternoon affair. Detwiler has a 2-5 record this year with a respectable 3.34 ERA. He took the loss in his last time out against the Phillies when he went six innings allowing seven hits and four runs. He faced off against the Rockies on June 13th and took a no decision. In the game he lasted only five innings allowing six hits and three runs. At home this year, Detwiler has a 1-2 record with a 2.92 ERA. The history is brief but Rockies hitters have owned Detwiler in their previous matchups. They are hitting .389 against him with seven doubles and four RBI in 36 at bats. Carlos Gonzalez is 2-2 against him with a double.

The Nationals lineup for the game today is as follows:
1. Jeff Kobernus, CF
2. Anthony Rendon, 2B
3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
4. Jayson Werth, RF
5. Ian Desmond, SS
6. Chris Marrero, 1B
7. Kurt Suzuki, C
8. Steve Lombardozzi, LF
9. Ross Detwiler, P

The Rockies lineup for the game today is as follows:
1. Dexter Fowler, CF
2. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B

Rockies End Losing Streak in a Big Way

Perhaps the Colorado Rockies should wear their batting practice jerseys more often. That is what they were wearing this afternoon and the offense went off. The offense finally came to life as they beat the Nationals 7-1. The Rockies got things going with a bang as they scored three runs in the first inning and then another three runs in the fourth inning. Dan Haren had his shortest outing of the year as he lasted only 3 1/3rd innings allowing seven hits and six runs. Jhoulys Chacin controlled the strike zone on the afternoon and finished the day going seven innings allowing five hits and no runs. He walked one and struck out three. The best thing to see is that his pitch count after seven innings was only 94 which is what you want from a starter is to be able to work later into the game and have a lower pitch count.

Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 20 games after he singled in the first inning off of Dan Haren. Every Rockies starter had at least one hit including Jhoulys Chacin who helped his own cause with an RBI single in the fourth inning. DJ LeMahieu hit his first home run on the season and collected three total hits on the day. Corey Dickerson made his Major League debut today playing right field and did not waste any time getting his first hit out of the way. Dickerson came up to bat in the first inning and lined a RBI double to the left center field gap. He later doubled in his next at bat and finished the day 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI. The Rockies are back at the .500 mark as they improve their record to 38-38.

The Rockies will be back at it tomorrow afternoon against the Nationals in the series finale. This will be the last time that the two teams will meet up this year unless they face each other in the playoffs. The first pitch for the game tomorrow is scheduled for 11:35 AM Mountain time

Rockies Game Preview: 6/22

The Rockies will be looking to end their five game losing streak when they take on the Nationals in game three of their four game series Saturday morning. The Rockies lost a pitchers duel last night 2-1 as Stephen Strasburg picked up his first win of the month. The Rockies struck first in the game as DJ LeMahieu remained hot at the plate and drove in Josh Rutledge with an RBI single in the third inning. The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Ryan Zimmerman hit an RBI double off of Tyler Chatwood that evened things up at 1. Ian Desmond did it again to the Rockies as he homered in the seventh inning off of Manny Corpas which would be the difference in the game. Josh Rutledge and DJ LeMahieu each had two hits in the game which perhaps broke Rutledge out of the slump he has been in and hopefully into a hot streak which will last until Troy Tulowitzki is healthy enough to come back. Michael Cuddyer did extend his hitting streak as he singled in the game, his streak is now at 19 games.

The Rockies will be sending Jhoulys Chacin to the hill to face off against the Nationals. He will be trying to keep Ian Desmond quiet on the day as he has homered in three consecutive ballgames. On the year Chacin has a 5-3 record with a 4.26 ERA. He is coming off his best start of the year his last time out as he nearly went the distance against the Phillies. Chacin took a shutout into the ninth inning but after getting two outs he gave up two runs and Weiss had to pull him. He finished the day going 8 2/3rd innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out three and issuing no free passes. He faced the Nats on June 11th and secured the win for the Rockies even though he did not pitch very well. He lasted just five innings in that game and gave up seven hits and two runs, but the Rockies offense bailed him out and got him his fourth win of the season. Chacin has a 1-1 record on the road this year with a very respectable 2.66 ERA in four road starts. Nationals hitters against Chacin in their careers are hitting .299 against him with two home runs and nine RBI. Both home runs have been hit by Ryan Zimmerman who is 5-10 and also has a double and five RBI. Chacin had pinpoint control in his last start as he did not walk anyone for just the second time all season. If he can keep the ball low and in the strike zone then he will have a good chance to record a quality start and possibly a win as long as the offense does their part.

Facing off against the Rockies will be veteran right handed pitcher Dan Haren. Haren is coming into the game with a 4-8 record and a 5.72 ERA. He has been ineffective all season long which is something that the Rockies will look to take advantage of today. In his last start he took a no decision against the Phillies after going six innings allowing seven hits four runs, three walks and struck out three. Haren was hit around by the Rockies and took the loss on June 11th when he went five innings allowing eight hits, five runs, one walk and struck out six. Haren has a 3-2 record at home with a 5.63 ERA in six games started. Rockies hitters are hitting a combined .241 against Haren with 11 home runs and 21 RBI in 158 combined at bats against him. Carlos Gonzalez has the best stats against Haren in his career as he has eight hits in 21 at bats including two doubles, four home runs and 7 RBI. Haren will be looking to keep the Rockies sown and extend their losing streak to six games.

The Nationals lineup for today's game is as follows:
1. Denard Span, CF
2. Anthony Rendon, 2B
3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
4. Adam LaRoche, 1B
5. Ian Desmond, SS
6. Roger Bernadina, RF
7. Steve Lombardozzi, LF
8. Jhonatan Solano, C
9. Dan Haren, P

The Rockies lineup for today's game is as follows:
1. Dexter Fowler, CF
2. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, 1B
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Corey Dickerson, RF
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B
8. Josh Rutledge, SS
9. Jhoulys, Chacin, P

First pitch for the game today is at 10:05 AM Mountain time.

Rockies Fall Short Against Nationals

The Rockies lost a close game to the Nationals tonight and it gave Stephen Strasburg his first win in the month of June. Strasburg had all of his pitches working and it was tough for the Rockies to get anything going offensively. The Rockies pushed the first run of the game across in the third inning when red hot DJ LeMahieu drove in Josh Rutledge with a single. Unfortunately that was all of the offense on the night for the Rockies. Ryan Zimmerman hit a game tying double in the sixth inning off of Tyler Chatwood and then Ian Desmond hit a home run in the 7th inning off of Manny Corpas and that was all of the scoring from the game.

Stephen Strasburg pitched seven innings allowing five hits and just the one run. He did not walk anybody and struck out nine. Tyler Chatwood also threw the ball well as he went six innings allowing only four hits, one run, two walks and he struck out four on the day. Ian Desmond hit his third home run in as many days and continues to be a thorn in the Rockies side. On a brighter note, Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 19 games when he roped a single to right field in his first at bat.

The Rockies will play the Nationals in a early game tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 10:05 AM Mountain time. The Rockies will try and avoid losing six straight games and begin a winning streak of their own.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/21

The Rockies failed to get anything going on offense last night against the Nationals again and now their losing streak is at four games. Roy Oswalt made his debut and looked good as he struck out 11, but he gave up four runs and only lasted four innings. The Nats pounded out 11 hits and four players with multiple hits. Perhaps the best thing that happened on the night was when Josh Rutledge pinch hit late in the game and drew a walk. He has struggled since being called back up as he has only one hit and his strikeout numbers have increased. This shows that he was patient at the plate and an at bat like that could get him going in the right direction moving forward.

Tonight the Rockies will look to Tyler Chatwood to try and stop the bleeding against the Nationals. Chatwood on the year is 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA. He got the win in his last game out against the Phillies when he went five innings allowing just two runs. In three starts on the road, Chatwood has been fantastic going 2-1 with a 0.56 ERA. He has allowed only one run in 16 innings pitched. The one run he allowed was in the game in which he hurt his triceps against the Reds. He went four innings allowing the one run and was taken out of the game to avoid further injury. Chatwood has only faced Kurt Suzuki and Denard Span out of players currently on the Nationals roster. Span is 1-2 against him and Suzuki is 3-5 with a double. Chatwood is a different pitcher than he has been in the past and he will be looking to prove that tonight as he faces off with the Nats.

Highly touted star Stephen Strasburg will be taking the mound to face off against the Rockies offense. Strasburg on the year has posted a 3-6 record with a 2.50 ERA. He has not been getting the run support from his offense that he needs which is why his record does not indicate how he has pitched this year. He took the loss in his last start even though he only allowed one hit and one run. He lasted five innings but walked four batters which lead to his elevated pitch count. This was his first start back from the disabled list so the Nationals were being very cautious with their star pitcher. At home this year, Strasburg is 2-3 with a 1.09 ERA in five starts. Current Rockies hitters have owned Strasburg in their previous matchups. In 35 combined at bats the Rockies have 14 hits, two home runs, and 6 RBI. Tyler Colvin is 3-3 against Strasburg with two home runs. Strasburg is one of the best young pitchers in the game of baseball, but even the best lose sometimes and the Rockies will be looking to make that happen today.

The Nationals lineup for tonight's game is as follows:
1. Denard Span, CF
2. Anthony Rendon, 2B
3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
4. Adam LaRoche, 1B
5. Jayson Werth, RF
6. Ian Desmond, SS
7. Steve Lombardozzi, LF
8. Kurt Suzuki, C
9. Stephen Strasburg, P

The Rockies lineup for tonight's game is as follows:
1. Dexter Fowler, CF
2. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Todd Helton, 1B
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B
8. Josh Rutledge, SS
9. Tyler Chatwood, P

First pitch for the game tonight is scheduled for 5:05 PM Mountain time.

Rockies lose opener to Nationals

The Rockies lost the game tonight to the Nationals by the final score of 5-1. The debut of Roy Oswalt did not have the result that he was looking for but it gave hope for what he might be able to bring to the Rockies for the rest of the season. Oswalt finished the night throwing five innings allowing nine hits and four runs but he struck out 11 batters. The 11 strikeouts was just one off of his career high. Oswalt's stuff looked electric and his fastball was higher than it has been in a couple of years. He sat consistently around 92 MPH on the gun and even ran it up as high as 94. His changeup was in the lower 80's and it had good late movement on it and was a great out pitch that he had in his repertoire. His curveball looked just like it did when he led the league in wins in 2004. It was a big breaking pitch that had 12-6 movement on it. All in all it was a good start for Oswalt, and even though he gave up some hits and runs, they were nothing that is concerning as he was just shaking off the rust from not pitching this year at the Major League level. This is a start that he will look to build upon as he he moves forward. One thing he will look to improve upon is his pitch count and working deeper into the games. He threw 102 pitches in five innings of work which will need to get better in order to get deeper into games.

Offensively the Rockies were unable to muster much against the strong performance by Jordan Zimmerman. Zimmerman went eight innings allowing six hits, one run and struck out nine hitters. DJ LeMahieu and Todd Helton each had two hits tonight and Michael Cuddyer was able to extend his hitting streak to 18 games when he got a single in the first inning. Other than that the rest of the Rockies were stifled at the plate except for Nolan Arenado who had a single on the night. The Rockies have struggled offensively on the current road trip as they have now lost four straight games and have failed to hold a lead in any of the games.

It does not get any easier for the Rockies tomorrow night as they will be facing Stephen Strasburg. Tyler Chatwood will be the pitcher for the Rockies and he will be looking for his fifth win on the season. First pitch for the game tomorrow night is at 5:05 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/20

The Colorado Rockies are beginning their series against the Washington Nationals on Thursday night. The Nationals got the better of the Rockies in the series earlier this month as the Nats took two out of three against the Rockies at Coors Field. The Rockies will be looking to dish out some payback and return the favor to the Nationals as they begin the series at Nationals Park.

Roy Oswalt will be making his season debut and will be pitching in his first game as a member of the Colorado Rockies. Oswalt has battled some back issues over the last couple of years but says he is feeling better now and will be looking to regain some of the form that led him to three all stars games in his career. He was named the NLCS MVP in 2005 as he helped lead the Astros to the World Series. In his career Oswalt is 163-96 with a 3.28 ERA. If he can regain even a portion of what he used to be then the Rockies will be getting an upgrade over Jeff Francis. He will be called upon to go deeper into ball games and also be a veteran leader to the younger pitchers on the team. Look for him to try and make a big splash and beat the Nationals in tonight's game.

Facing off against Oswalt tonight will be young right hand pitcher Jordan Zimmerman. Zimmerman is having an All Star caliber year as he has posted a 9-3 record with a 2.44 ERA. He was roughed up in his last start as he lasted only five innings and gave up eight hits and six runs against the Cleveland Indians. He has been perfect at home this year in seven starts, he is 6-0 with a staggering 1.06 ERA. He has been nearly untouchable at home and that is something that he will be looking to continue tonight against the struggling Rockies offense. Current Rockies are hitting just .245 with no home runs and no RBI in 53 combined at bats against him. They only have one extra base hit against Zimmerman so he has had the number of the Rockies in his career.

The Nationals lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Denard Span, CF
2. Anthony Rendon, 2B'
3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
4. Adam LaRoche, 1B
5. Jayson Werth, RF
6. Ian Desmond, SS
7. Steve Lombardozzi, LF
8. Kurt Suzuki, C
9. Jordan Zimmerman, P

The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Tyler Colvin, CF
2. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Nolan Arenado, 3B
6. Todd Helton, 1B
7. Yorvit Torrealba, C
8. Jonathan Herrera, SS
9. Roy Oswalt, P

First pitch for tonight's game is at 5:05 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Swept by the Blue Jays

The Colorado Rockies were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays after losing on Wednesday night 5-2. It was another bad start to the game as Juan Nicasio gave up a three run home run to Adam Lind in the first inning of the game, and the Rockies offense was never able to catch up. Nicasio finished the game going five innings giving up four hits, four runs (two earned runs), walked one and struck out three. Michael Cuddyer was able to extend his hitting streak to 17 games when he hit a single in the first inning. Carlos Gonzalez, Wilin Rosario and Yorvit Torrealba each had two hits on the night and CarGo hit his league leading 21st home run of the season. He is currently on pace to have 47 home runs on the year. If he can keep it up then he will be in the conversation for the MVP when it comes time to vote.

The Rockies will be heading to Washington DC tonight to take on the Washington Nationals for a four game series. Last week when the Nationals were at Coors Field, they were lucky enough to not have to face Stephen Strasburg or Gio Gonzalez. They will still miss Gio this time but they will have to face the flame throwing Strasburg who is scheduled to pitch on Friday night. Tomorrow, Roy Oswalt will be making his much anticipated debut as a member of the Colorado Rockies. He will be wearing his usual number 44 jersey when he takes the hill as he made a deal with Juan Nicasio who was wearing that number. Hopefully he can add a spark to the rotation and get the Rockies going in the right direction on the mound.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/19

The Rockies will be playing the Toronto Blue Jays tonight in Toronto in the series finale. They dropped games one and two so they will be looking to salvage at least one victory tonight and maintain their position in the National League West division. Jeff Francis was rocked for eight runs last night and Juan Nicasio will have the task of making sure that doesn't happen tonight as well.

Juan Nicasio will take the mound tonight, and will be looking to tame the hot Blue Jays offense. On the year Nicasio is 4-2 with a 4.86 ERA. He struggled in his last start as he went 5 2/3rd innings allowing seven hits, five runs, two walks and struck out four batters. He did not factor in the decision against the Phillies as he left when the game was in favor of the Rockies but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead. On the road this year Nicasio is 2-1 with a 4.86 ERA. He has limited experience against Blue Jays hitters but he has had the opportunity to watch them in the first two games of the series and he has learned that if you leave the ball out and over the zone, then they will hit it hard. Nicasio needs to have a good start today to assure that there is not a chance that he can be sent out to make room for Roy Oswalt on Thursday. All signs point to Jeff Francis being designated, but Nicasio still needs to make sure his name is not in the conversation at all.

The Blue Jays will be sending veteran left handed pitcher Mark Buehrle to the hill tonight to face off against the Rockies. On the year Buehrle is 3-4 with a 4.66 ERA. He got off to a bad start this year but is pitching better as of late and will be looking to keep that going. His last time out he went seven innings allowing four hits, no runs, one walk and struck out seven. It was his best start of the year and he will want to continue throwing like that in this start. With Buehrle spending his entire career in the American League, the history between him and the Rockies hitters is very limited with the exception of Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer has faced Buehrle 107 times and has 34 hits including three home runs and 13 RBI. Buehrle will be trying to keep the Rockies offense down and not let them win their first ever game in Toronto.

The Blue Jays lineup for today's game is as follows:
1. Melky Cabrera, LF
2. Jose Bautista, RF
3. Edwin Encarnacion, DH
4. Adam Lind, 1B
5. Colby Rasmus, CF
6. JP Arencibia, C
7. Maicer Izturis, 3B
8. Emilio Bonafacio, 2B
9. Munenori Kawasaki, SS

The Rockies lineup for today's game is as follows:
1. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
2. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
3. Michael Cuddyer, RF
4. Wilin Rosario, DH
5. Nolan Arenado, 3B
6. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
7. Tyler Colvin, CF
8. Yorvit Torrealba, C
9. Josh Rutledge, SS

First pitch for tonight's game is at 5:07 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Lose Again in Toronto

Jeff Francis blew up in the first inning of the game tonight and the Rockies were unable to fight their way back into the game. Francis gave up four runs on six hits in the first inning and it could have been worse if not for a great throw from Carlos Gonzalez to nail Mark DeRosa at third base. Esmil Rogers was fantastic on the night and picked up his third win on the season. Rogers threw 6 2/3rds innings allowing four hits, two runs and struck out five. He did not give up his first hit until there was one out in the seventh inning and Jonathan Herrera hit a single up the middle. Edwin Encarnacion was the offensive star of the night as he went 2-4 with a home run and a double and had three RBI in the game. JP Arencibia and Maicer Izturis hit back to back home runs in the sixth inning off of Francis which pushed their lead to 8-0. The Rockies were finally able to string a couple of hits together and end their scoring drought at 15 innings.

Jeff Francis may have thrown his last pitch as a member of the Colorado Rockies. He wishes it would have gone differently, but things took a turn for the worse early on in the game. Francis gave up four runs on six hits in the first inning and was unable to get anybody out. He got some help from his defense in the inning when Carlos Gonzalez picked up his Major League leading ninth outfield assist. If Gonzalez had not gunned down DeRosa then the first inning may have never ended. Francis did bounce back nicely from it as he retired 10 straight hitters at one point but then he had another meltdown once he reached the fifth inning. He gave up a two run home run to Edwin Encarnacion and then issued back to back home runs in the sixth inning to JP Arencibia and Maicer Izturis. His final line was six innings, 10 hits, eight runs and two strikeouts. The Rockies have announced that Roy Oswalt will be called up to the Major Leagues and start on Thursday and the speculation is that Jeff Francis may be designated for assignment to clear room for Oswalt. Francis has been bad this year and has left too many pitches up in the zone which has resulted in a lot of crooked numbers being put up on the scoreboard by the opposing teams.

Michael Cuddyer was able to get a single on the night which extended his hitting streak to 16 games. His current hitting streak is the longest one of his career. The loss tonight by the Rockies extends their losing streak in Toronto to eight games. In fact the Rockies have never won a game in Toronto, they are 0-8 all time.

The Final game of the series between the Rockies and the Blue Jays will take place tomorrow night with first pitch set for 5:07 PM Mountain time. The Rockies will be looking to salvage one game in the series and remain within striking distance in their division.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/18

The Rockies are set to take on the Toronto Blue Jays in game two of their series tonight at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Blue Jays took game one of the series when they shut out the Rockies for a 2-0 win. Jorge De La Rosa was outstanding for the Rockies as he went seven innings allowing just one hit. Matt Belisle was unable to keep the game tied in the eighth inning when the Blue Jays got two men across the plate on a single by Maicer Izturis.

The Rockies will send Jeff Francis to the mound tonight to take on the Blue Jays. Francis bought himself one more start with the Rockies when he went six innings allowing two runs and striking out eight batters against the Washington Nationals. His season numbers are not very good with a 2-4 record and a 5.87 ERA. On the road this year Francis has posted a 1-1 record with a 4.97 ERA. The history between Blue Jays hitters and Francis favor the Blue Jays as they are hitting a combined .307 against him with three home runs and 16 RBI in 101 at bats. Francis may just be holding a place for Roy Oswalt who could be called up depending on the result of the game today. Francis has been disappointing this year and has failed to make it past the sixth inning in any game this year. He has only one win since April 5th and has failed to keep opponents off the base paths by allowing hits and walks at a staggering rate. Tonight very well could be the last start for Jeff Francis as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

The Blue Jays will be sending Esmil Rogers to the mound tonight to face off against his former team. Rogers is 2-2 on the year with a 3.21 ERA. He was coming out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays but was recently promoted to the starting rotation. His last time out he went seven innings allowing just one run on five hits against the Texas Rangers and defeated them 3-1. At home this year he has an 0-1 record with a 2.79 ERA. Rogers is very familiar with the Rockies hitters as he was a member of the Rockies for each of the last four years. Rogers will be looking to make a statement against his former team and show them what they are missing by pitching well tonight.

The Blue Jays lineup for tonight's game against the Rockies is as follows:
1. Melky Cabrera, LF
2. Jose Bautista, RF
3. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B
4. Adam Lind, DH
5. Mark DeRosa, 3B
6. Rajai Davis, CF
7. JP Arencibia, C
8. Maicer Izturis, SS
9. Emilio Bonafacio, 2B

The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Josh Rutledge, 2B
2. Jordan Pacheco, DH
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Todd Helton, 1B
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B
8. Tyler Colvin, CF
9. Jonathan Herrera, SS

First pitch for tonight's game is at 5:07 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Lose Opener in Toronto

The Rockies lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by a final score of 2-0 in a good old fashioned pitchers duel at the Rogers Centre. Jorge De La Rosa tossed seven innings of one hit baseball but was unable to secure his eighth win on the season because the Rockies offense was equally outmatched by Josh Johnson of the Blue Jays. Johnson went 7 1/3rd innings allowing five hits and striking out 10. Neither pitcher factored into the decision and the game was ultimately left in the hands of the bullpen. Brett Cecil came in and finished the eighth inning and picked up the victory for the Blue Jays improving his season record to 3-0. Matt Belisle came in for relief of De La Rosa in the eighth inning and struggled as he gave up two runs on two hits and walked a batter. He gave up the game winning two RBI single to Maicer Izturis which was all that the Jays needed on the night. Belisle is now 4-4 on the year.

The bullpen has been showing signs of fatigue in the last few weeks and it is beginning to show on the field. The starting pitchers need to control the strike zone better and be able to work later into the game. If they continue to throw five or six innings each time out then the bullpen will be out of gas by the middle of August and the Rockies chance to make a run at the playoffs will be significantly lower. Perhaps a veteran like Roy Oswalt could be an example to the younger pitchers on the team and teach them how to work deeper into the games. Oswalt has been a workhorse throughout his career excluding the last couple of years when he battled injuries. He may not be as young and dominant as he once was but I guarantee you that he still has the mental edge and know how to be able to teach the Rockies young staff how to win and how to get deeper into the games so they can save the bullpen from getting overworked.

Game two of the series against the Blue Jays will take place on Tuesday night at 5:07 PM Mountain time. Jeff Francis will be taking on former Rockies pitcher Esmil Rogers. The Rockies will be looking to spark some offense and blow the roof off of the Rogers Centre.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/17

The Colorado Rockies are north of the border tonight as they will be taking on the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto. The Rockies won two straight against the Phillies to take the series against them and they were able to show up offensively each of the last two games. The absence of Troy Tulowitzki is not evident after just two games without him, but he surely will be missed later on down the road especially if Josh Rutledge continues to struggle at the plate.

Jorge De La Rosa will be getting the ball tonight to take on the Blue Jays. On the year De La Rosa is 7-4 with a 3.49 ERA. He did not have his best stuff the last time out against the Nationals as he gave up three runs in 5 1/3rd innings pitched. He took the loss in the game. He will be looking to bounce back against the Blue Jays tonight and get back on track to what he was doing previously in the season. On the road this year De La Rosa is 2-3 with a 3.57 ERA in seven starts. Current Blue Jays players are hitting just .222 off of De La Rosa in his career in 45 combined at bats. Tonight he will be looking to control the strike zone again and keep the ball low and away from the power of the lineup.

The Blue Jays will be sending former Marlin Josh Johnson. Johnson has compiled an 0-2 record on the year with a high 5.40 ERA. Johnson spent some time on the disabled list and missed all of May so he is working his way back into shape on the mound. When he has his good stuff Johnson is one of the premier pitchers in the league but he has failed to be consistent and has battled injuries throughout his career. At home this year Johnson has a 0-0 record with a 4.63 ERA in four starts. Current Rockies hitters have not had much success against Johnson as they are hitting a combined .250 with one home run and seven RBI in 52 at bats. Dexter Fowler has had the most success against him as he is 4-6 with two doubles and an RBI.

The Blue Jays lineup for tonight's game against the Rockies is as follows:
1. Melky Cabrera, DH
2. Jose Bautista, RF
3. Edwin Encarnacion, 3B
4. Adam Lind, 1B
5. Mark DeRosa, 2B
6. Rajai Davis, LF
7. Colby Rasmus, CF
8. JP Arencibia, C
9. Maicer Izturis, SS

The Rockies lineup for the game tonight is as follows:
1. Dexter Fowler, CF
2. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, DH
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Todd Helton, 1B
6. Wilin Rosario, C
7. Tyler Colvin, LF
8. Nolan Arenado, 3B
9. Jonathan Herrera, SS

First pitch for the game tonight is at 5:07 PM Mountain time.

Rockies Game Preview: 6/15

The Rockies played their first game without Troy Tulowitzki last night and even though the offense showed up, the pitching staff blew a five run lead and eventually lost the game 8-7. Hobbled Carlos Gonzalez went 3-3 with a home run last night and showed no ill effects after being struck in the left foot on Thursday afternoon.

Tyler Chatwood will be taking the ball for the Rockies today and will have the task of shutting down the Phillies offense. On the year Chatwood has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.14 ERA. Chatwood will be making his first start since he had to come out of the game early when he was facing the Reds on June 3rd. He had some triceps soreness but he is feeling better and will start today. At Coors Field this year Chatwood has made three starts and is 1-0 with a 3.57 ERA. He has limited experience against Phillies hitters but in their match ups they are hitting .308 against him with six RBI in 26 at bats.

The Phillies will counter with Jonathan Pettibone who is 3-2 with a 3.70 ERA. The 22 year old rookie has never faced the Rockies and will be looking to make an impression on them by stifling the talented offense. Pettibone has had an impressive start to his big league career. He came out of nowhere especially since he had been putting up mediocre numbers at the Minor League level. All that being said he has pitched well as a member of the Phillies and can't be overlooked by the Rockies for today's game.

The Phillies lineup for today's game against the Rockies is as follows:
1. Ben Revere, CF
2. Michael Young, 3B
3. Jimmy Rollins, SS
4. Ryan Howard, 1B
5. Dominic Brown, LF
6. John Mayberry, RF
7. Freddy Galvis, 2B
8. Humberto Quintero, C
9. Jonathan Pettibone, P

The Rockies lineup for today's game is as follows:
1. Josh Rutledge, SS
2. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
3. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Tyler Colvin, CF
7. Nolan Arenado, 3B
8. DJ LeMahieu, 2B
9. Tyler Chatwood, P

First pitch for today's game is at 2:10 PM Mountain time.
