Rockies Game Preview: 6/14

The Colorado Rockies are beginning a three game series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The Rockies are coming off a disappointing series against the Nationals which they lost two out of three games to them. The Rockies had a tough game Thursday not only for the day but the result of losing three players to injury could effect the team for a few weeks. Troy Tulowitzki suffered the worst of it as he suffered a broken rib while diving for a ball in the eighth inning of the game. Tulo is going to be out 4-6 weeks while he recovers from the injury. He is expected to be placed on the disabled list prior to the game on Friday and the Rockies are expected to bring up Josh Rutledge from AAA to take his spot on the roster. Carlos Gonzalez suffered a bruised left foot on a freak accident during the first inning of the game on Thursday. He was struck by a line drive off of the bat of Jordan Pacheco while standing in the on deck circle. He is considered day to day but with the injury not being to serious then he should not miss much time if any. Dexter Fowler was struck in the hand by a pitch from Ross Detwiler. He has a bruised knuckle and is also day to day. The other players on the team will have to step up wile the big bats are out in order to stay in the division race.

Tonight the Rockies will be sending Juan Nicasio to the mound to face off against the Phillies. Nicasio is 4-2 on the year with a 4.61 ERA on the season. Nicasio was perfect through five and a third innings his last time out before he gave up four straight hits and eventually gave up two runs before being removed from the game. He looked very good in his start and commanded his stuff throughout the game which is a good sign and it shows his development as a pitcher this year. At home this year Nicasio is 2-1 with a 4.31 ERA in six starts. The only hitter on the Phillies roster who Nicasio has faced is Laynce Nix who struck out in his only at bat against him. Nicasio will be looking to keep the ball low in the zone and away from the power bats of Dominic Brown and Ryan Howard. If he can do that then he will have a good shot at winning the game.

The Phillies are sending Kyle Kendrick to the mound tonight. On the year Kendrick is 6-4 with a 3.22 ERA. He took the loss his last time out as he went six innings allowing three runs and striking out six. Prior to that start he had won two straight decisions including a complete game against the Marlins on June 3rd. Kendrick has two complete games on the year and has really performed well for the Phillies throughout the year. Rockies players are hitting .258 in 62 at bats. Yorvit Torrealba has the only home run against Kendrick.
