The Rockies failed to get anything going on offense last night against the Nationals again and now their losing streak is at four games. Roy Oswalt made his debut and looked good as he struck out 11, but he gave up four runs and only lasted four innings. The Nats pounded out 11 hits and four players with multiple hits. Perhaps the best thing that happened on the night was when Josh Rutledge pinch hit late in the game and drew a walk. He has struggled since being called back up as he has only one hit and his strikeout numbers have increased. This shows that he was patient at the plate and an at bat like that could get him going in the right direction moving forward.
Tonight the Rockies will look to Tyler Chatwood to try and stop the bleeding against the Nationals. Chatwood on the year is 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA. He got the win in his last game out against the Phillies when he went five innings allowing just two runs. In three starts on the road, Chatwood has been fantastic going 2-1 with a 0.56 ERA. He has allowed only one run in 16 innings pitched. The one run he allowed was in the game in which he hurt his triceps against the Reds. He went four innings allowing the one run and was taken out of the game to avoid further injury. Chatwood has only faced Kurt Suzuki and Denard Span out of players currently on the Nationals roster. Span is 1-2 against him and Suzuki is 3-5 with a double. Chatwood is a different pitcher than he has been in the past and he will be looking to prove that tonight as he faces off with the Nats.
Highly touted star Stephen Strasburg will be taking the mound to face off against the Rockies offense. Strasburg on the year has posted a 3-6 record with a 2.50 ERA. He has not been getting the run support from his offense that he needs which is why his record does not indicate how he has pitched this year. He took the loss in his last start even though he only allowed one hit and one run. He lasted five innings but walked four batters which lead to his elevated pitch count. This was his first start back from the disabled list so the Nationals were being very cautious with their star pitcher. At home this year, Strasburg is 2-3 with a 1.09 ERA in five starts. Current Rockies hitters have owned Strasburg in their previous matchups. In 35 combined at bats the Rockies have 14 hits, two home runs, and 6 RBI. Tyler Colvin is 3-3 against Strasburg with two home runs. Strasburg is one of the best young pitchers in the game of baseball, but even the best lose sometimes and the Rockies will be looking to make that happen today.
