Rockies Game Preview: 6/12

The Colorado Rockies are taking on the Washington Nationals in the second game of their three game series on Wednesday night. The Rockies took the first game of the series 8-3 behind the offense from Tyler Colvin who homered twice and had four RBI on the night. The Nationals are without their two phenoms in Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg, so the Rockies need to take advantage of their position and make sure that they secure a series victory.

Tonight the Rockies will be sending Jorge De La Rosa to the mound to face off against the Nationals. On the year De La Rosa has a 7-3 record with a 3.38 ERA. He was roughed up in his last start and took a no decision against the Padres. In that game he went five innings allowing 11 hits, four runs and he struck out five and did not walk a batter. He left the game in line for the win but the Rockies bullpen could not hold the lead. He will be looking to remain perfect at Coors field on the year as he has a 5-0 record at home this year with a very respectable 3.15 ERA in six starts. He is dealing with a cut on his finger of his throwing hand so it will be interesting to see how that effects him during tonight's game. The history between Nationals hitters and De La Rosa is very limited but in 42 at bats against him he has held them to a .262 average with two home runs and nine RBI. De La Rosa is finally beginning to build his confidence back up and pitch like he was prior to the surgery. He has regained his form and one of the main reasons is because he has been working ahead of the hitters and getting into favorable counts. If he continues to do this and work the corners of the zone then he will be able to keep the opponents offense in check and give the Rockies a good chance to come away with the victory.

The Nationals will be sending Ross Ohlendorf to the mound tonight to make his season debut for the Nationals. Ohlendorf has been pitching for the Nationals AAA team in Syracuse this season and has put up mediocre numbers in the process. On the year he has a 4-5 record with 4.27 ERA. Ohlendorf has spent time in the Major Leagues each of the last six seasons for the Yankees, Pirates and Padres. He was with the Padres in 2012 and had a 4-4 record in 13 games pitched. He does not have an overpowering fastball as it sits in the upper 80's to lower 90's but he has a decent slider and a good change up that he mixes in to keep the hitters off balance. Rockies hitters have fared well against him in the past and Tulowitzki has two career home runs off of him in just 10 at bats.
