The Rockies played their first game without Troy Tulowitzki last night and even though the offense showed up, the pitching staff blew a five run lead and eventually lost the game 8-7. Hobbled Carlos Gonzalez went 3-3 with a home run last night and showed no ill effects after being struck in the left foot on Thursday afternoon.
Tyler Chatwood will be taking the ball for the Rockies today and will have the task of shutting down the Phillies offense. On the year Chatwood has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.14 ERA. Chatwood will be making his first start since he had to come out of the game early when he was facing the Reds on June 3rd. He had some triceps soreness but he is feeling better and will start today. At Coors Field this year Chatwood has made three starts and is 1-0 with a 3.57 ERA. He has limited experience against Phillies hitters but in their match ups they are hitting .308 against him with six RBI in 26 at bats.
The Phillies will counter with Jonathan Pettibone who is 3-2 with a 3.70 ERA. The 22 year old rookie has never faced the Rockies and will be looking to make an impression on them by stifling the talented offense. Pettibone has had an impressive start to his big league career. He came out of nowhere especially since he had been putting up mediocre numbers at the Minor League level. All that being said he has pitched well as a member of the Phillies and can't be overlooked by the Rockies for today's game.
