The Colorado Rockies came up short on Wednesday night in Chicago and fell to the Chicago Cubs 6-3. The Cubs were led both offensively and defensively by Jeff Samardzija. On the mound Samardzija threw eight innings allowing two runs and striking out seven. At the plate Samardzija took his counterpart Jon Garland deep to center field in the second inning and gave the Cubs the lead for good. Things got interesting in the ninth inning when the Cubs put in closer Kevin Gregg in a non save situation. After allowing a base hit to Troy Tulowitzki he got Todd Helton to fly out to center but was then charged with an error when fielding a high chopper hit by Nolan Arenado. Josh Rutledge came through with an RBI single to make it a three run game with pinch hitter Wilin Rosario coming up to the plate. Rosario hit a sinking liner to center that David Dejesus went to his knees to catch and end the game.
The Rockies will be heading home to begin a seven game home stand against division opponents. They begin on Thursday night with the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants. The Giants will be in for four games and then the Diamondbacks come to town.
