This Day in Baseball History: 5/31

A look at May 31st in the pages of Baseball History

1938- Lou Gehrig plays in his 2000th consecutive game and helps the Yankees defeat the Red Sox 12-5. Gehrig had an RBI single during the game.

1964- The longest game in Major League Baseball history is played between the Giants and the Mets. Gaylord Perry pitches 10 innings in relief and helped the Giants beat the Mets 8-6 in the 22 inning affair. The game lasted 7 hours and 23 minutes.

1997- Ila Borders becomes the first women to play in a minor league baseball game. Borders pitched in relief for the St. Paul Saints and gives up three runs without recording an out. She would redeem herself the next day as she came in and struck out the side.

2007- Roy Halladay needs just 1 hour and 50 minutes to beat the White Sox 2-0. The win gave Halladay his 100th career victory and he needed just 200 starts to accomplish the feat.

2008- Manny Ramirez smashes his 500th career home run at Camden Yards in Baltimore. He becomes the 24th player to reach the milestone and the 12th youngest.
