The Colorado Rockies offense came alive on Tuesday night as they defeated the Cubs 9-4 to even the series at 1-1. Carlos Gonzales was perfect on the evening as he was 5-5 with two home runs and was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Gonzales and the rest of the Rockies will look to continue swinging the bat well as they end their six game road trip Wednesday night in Chicago against a tough match up in Jeff Samardzija. Don't be fooled by the 1-5 record of Samardzija on the year. He has electric stuff and has a 10.54 K/9 ratio working for him. His ERA is a respectable 3.70 but he has not received much offensive support from the Cubs hitters, a trend that will hopefully continue for his start today. The former standout as a wide receiver for Notre Dame has transitioned nicely from the gridiron to the diamond. Countering Samardzija will be Jon Garland for the Rockies. Garland is 3-3 on the year with a 4.83 ERA. Garland has been a game manager through the season and even though he has not been stellar, he has kept the Rockies in the game and given them a chance to win. In his last start he faced the Cardinals and went five innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs and took the loss as his counterpart was Shelby Miller who of course tossed a one hit shutout in the game.
