The Colorado Rockies lost a close game last night with a bang bang play in the ninth inning that allowed the game winning run to cross the plate for the Yankees. Both starting pitchers in the game fared well as Juan Nicasio went five innings allowing two hits, one walk and struck out five. the big blow against him was a two run homerun hit by Vernon Wells in the first inning. David Phelps pitched six innings allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. He held the lead until the second inning when Todd Helton evened the score with a two run shot. Both starting pitchers did not factor in the decision as the game remained tied at two until the ninth inning when Rafael Betancourt gave up the deciding run on an infield single by Brennan Boesch. It was another rare pitchers duel at Coors Field as David Robertson picked up the win for the Yankess and Mariano Rivera picked up his 12th save of the season when he shut the door on the Rockies in the Bottom half of the ninth inning.
The rubber match of the series will be an afternoon affair with first pitch set for 1:10 PM Mountain time. The matchup on the mound pits Jeff Francis (1-2 7.27 ERA) against veteran CC Sabathia (4-3 3.31 ERA). Troy Tulowitzki returns to action today as he will be back in the three hole. The Rockies lineup is as follows:
1. Eric Young Jr. RF
2. Dexter Fowler, CF
3. Troy Tulowitzki, SS
4. Carlos Gonzalez, LF
5. Wilin Rosario, C
6. Nolan Arenado, 3B
7. Jordan Pacheco, 1B
8. Josh Rutledge, 2B
9. Jeff Francis, P
The Yankees will counter with:
1. Brett Gardner, CF
2. Jayson Nix, SS
3. Robinson Cano, 2B
4. Vernon Wells, LF
5. Ben Francisco, RF
6. Chris Nelson, 3B
7. Lyle Overbay, 1B
8. Chris Stewart, C
9. CC Sabathia, P
Chris Nelson has not done much in the series as he returns to face his former team so he will be looking to have a major impact on the series finale and show the Rockies fans what they will be missing. Both teams will be looking to get their offenses going as there has only been a total of seven runs scored between both teams during the first two games of the series. The finale should be a hard fought team as both teams look to continue their winning ways and each team is looking to pick up their 20th win on the season.
