The Colorado Rockies are taking on the San Francisco Giants this afternoon in game two of their three game series in San Francisco. The Rockies took the opener against the Giants on Friday night 5-0 and will be looking to make it five straight wins against the Giants if they can secure a victory in the game today. Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton each had two hits last night, and the pitching staff shut out the Giants and limited them to only four hits total.
The match-up today features Juan Nicasio against Barry Zito. Nicasio is 4-1 with a 4.47 ERA. Zito is 3-3 with a 3.91 ERA. Nicasio is coming off of his best start on the year as the last time out he faced off with the Giants and went six innings allowing only three hits and no runs, while issuing only one walk and striking out five. Zito was the same pitcher on that day and was roughed up in 5 and 2/3rd innings. He gave up 11 hits and five runs while walking two and striking out four. Nicasio will be looking to build off of his strong start last time and make sure that he continues to show improvement to ensure that he has no chance that he is sent down when Jeff Francis is eligible to come off of the disabled list.
The Rockies hitters have hit Barry Zito fairly well throughout their match ups and combined as a team they are hitting .251 off of him. Both Wilin Rosario and Jonathan Herrera are batting a career .500 against Zito as they each are 4-8 against him. Carlos Gonzalez has 10 hits in 31 career (.323 average) at bats against Zito with one home run, one triple and seven RBI. Dexter Fowler has a career .296 average against Zito in 27 at bats. Two Rockies players who have struggled against Zito in their match ups have been Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton. Tulowitzki is 7-47 (.149 average) and has struck out 10 times against the crafty lefty. Helton is 5-27 (.185 average) with eight strikeouts. The Rockies will be looking to improve some of their numbers against Zito on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park.
