A look at May 27th in the pages of Baseball History


1941- Play is stopped in the seventh inning of a game between the Braves and Giants so that everyone who is in attendance at the famous Polo Grounds can listen to President Franklin D. Roosevelt radio address of the Proclamation of an Unlimited National Emergency. Play resumed after a 45 minute delay.

1968- Major League Baseball announces that they are expanding outside of the United States and will be awarding Montreal an expansion team. They also announce that San Diego will also be granted an expansion team.

1993- After hitting for a measly average of just .143 in 26 games for the Rockies, superstar Dale Murphy decided it is time to hang up his spikes for good and announces his retirement from the game of baseball. He finishes his career just two home runs shy of hitting 400

2006- Derek Jeter collects his 2000th hit with an RBI single off of Kansas City pitcher Jeremy Affeldt and becomes just the 8th Yankee to reach the milestone joining, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Babe Ruth and Bernie Williams.

2006- Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox defeats the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4 and becomes the 104th pitcher to hit the 200 victory mark.
